About Dorothy
Dorothy Lee is a nonprofit specialist with 15+ years of professional experience, consulting in a range of areas from human resources, to strategic planning, to culture and communications. Dorothy led a nonprofit through pivotal years of growth and change, and now supports leaders moving their organizations through major transitions.
Dorothy has a masters degree in organizational psychology, with a focus on change leadership, and her passion is supporting nonprofits as they navigate disruptions and transformations. A former Executive Director, she is experienced with organizations at all stages, including founding and start-up, scaling for a national and global reach, navigating strategic partnerships and mergers, creating effective people-driven networks, succession planning and implementation, and building archives and legacy planning.
Dorothy has worked closely with NGOs across the U.S. and in 30+ countries, impacting the lives of thousands of young people and families, and leading campaigns with participants in 170+ countries making 900 million+ impressions. Before consulting, Dorothy spent 12 years at LitWorld, eight as Creative Director and four as Executive Director, stewarding the organization through countless periods of change, including leading the transition beyond founder leadership. During her time at LitWorld, Dorothy also launched in-depth programs for kids and communities, and global campaigns, including HerStory, which was featured at United Nations events, and World Read Aloud Day, which continues to reach millions of participants every year. Under Dorothy's leadership, LitWorld was a finalist in Nonprofit New York’s Nonprofit Excellence Awards and an honoree in the Library of Congress’ Literacy Best Practices Awards.
Dorothy was born and raised in New York City, where she is now bringing up her family. Her approach is rooted in her parents’ creative process as community-driven theater artists and teachers. She received a B.A. in English from Amherst College, and an M.A. in Organizational Psychology & Change Leadership from Columbia University, Teachers College. Dorothy has an Embodied Social Justice Certificate from Transformative Change, and has participated in courses including Anti-Oppression Facilitation Fundamentals with the Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance, Power With, Not Power Over: Accountability in Action for White Women with Fleur Larsen Facilitation, and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Learning Lab with Nonprofit New York. She is a Coyle Fellow with the University of Notre Dame, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Mettawee River Theatre Company.
